BLUE DIAMOND GOES FOR $8.8 MILLION AT GENEVA SALE
A large blue diamond sold for 9.23 million Swiss francs ($8.78 million) at a jewellery auction marked by strong prices for both coloured and white diamonds, Christie's said.
The rectangular blue stone weighing 13.39 carats, set in a ring surrounded by tiny pink diamonds, was the top lot at its semi-annual jewellery sale in Geneva on Wednesday night.
Experts at Christie's and rival Sotheby's say collectors and traders remain hungry for unique items, especially coloured diamonds or historic gems, following world-record prices set for rare polished diamonds last year.
The blue diamond, which Christie's said was the largest blue diamond graded "fancy intense" in colour ever to be put on the block, had been estimated at $6 to $8 million. Its buyer, a private collector, chose to remain anonymous.
"It is truly exceptional to find a blue diamond of this intensity weighing more than 10 carats," Valdieu told reporters at a pre-sale briefing.
A flawless heart-shaped vivid yellow diamond weighing 21.4 carats, set on a diamond neck-chain, fetched nearly 3.3 million Swiss francs ($3.14 million), in line with its estimate.
The priciest lots at Sotheby's separate "Magnificent Jewels" sale are a pink diamond ring and a blue diamond ring, each estimated at over 2 million Swiss francs.

It's not available. Price: >= 1 Million $ per carat, I guess. Make an offer. :-) (No, I'm not the owner) Posted by: Diamondluva - May, 24 2008
Who is selling it? 1.5 for the stone or per carat? Posted by: Diamondluva - May, 27 2008
I have personally seen it. It is beautiful. It was analyzed by Stephen Hofer as the most saturated red he ever analyzed (more than the Hancock Red(he took the picture. It is for sale for $1,500,000.00. Posted by: steve - May, 27 2008
if this stone is the most saturated red in the world, and red is the rarest color.....then is this the rarest diamond in the world? is it available? if so how much? what is a fair price for such a stone?
i love this picture! Posted by: cheryl - May, 22 2008
The owner of the stone, Robert Bogel (hence the name Rob Red), is selling it for $1.5 million for the stone. Posted by: steve - May, 28 2008
That would be a new world record per carat if sold for that price. And considering the size of the stone it's almost crazy. On the other hand one could argue that given the absolute rarity of the stone all others are overpriced and this one is cheap. :-) Posted by: Diamondluva - June, 02 2008 |

THIEVES STEAL A DIAMOND NECKLACE AT A DUTCH ARTS FAIR
Thieves have stolen a diamond necklace worth an estimated US$1.8 million at an arts fair in the southern Dutch city of Maastricht, police said Friday.
Two women from Mexico and a man from Costa Rica suspected of involvement have been arrested, police spokeswoman Renske Hamming said, but the necklace has not been recovered. Police said the theft was on Thursday afternoon.
The vendor selling the necklace noticed it was missing shortly after having a conversation with the two women, but when she ran after them, the man from Costa Rica "who was apparently together with the women blocked her," a police statement said. All three were arrested before leaving the grounds of the TEFAF fair, but the necklace had vanished.

15 million £ stolen in Milan
Tuesday, 26 February 2008 Thieves dug an underground tunnel into a top Milan showroom and stole £15m of diamond-studded jewellery while the owners were in Los Angeles hosting an Oscars party. Seven men dressed as police broke into the Damiani showroom on Sunday morning without letting off alarms or being captured on CCTV, and took little more than 40 minutes to execute their plan after tying up staff. They had spent a month digging from a disused cellar in a building next door. Millions of euros worth of jewels were stolen, but some of the most valuable pieces were being used by Hollywood stars during the Academy Awards ceremony. The British Oscar winner Tilda Swinton had been provided a diamond-studded bracelet by the jeweller. Milan police said: "The gang all wore dark sunglasses and spoke with southern Italian accents." |

The Rojtman Diamond
Graff bought the stone at a Sothebys auction last fall for $1.92 million (its estimate had been $1.5 to $2 million, as I recall). I came across this photo a few days ago, its the first time I'd seen it set in jewelry. It weighs 107.46 carats and is Fancy Yellow. There are 8.71 carats of pink and brown(?) diamonds around it, and its set in rose gold.
History:
The early history of the diamond such as the country of origin, mine of origin, date of discovery, original owners of the diamond, the person or company involved in the cutting etc. are all unknown. But some experts believe that the diamonds origin is from the alluvial deposits of the South African diamond fields, in the early days of diamond mining in South Africa. The 123-carat Stewart diamond also originated in a similar manner.
The first time the diamond made its public appearance was in 1957, when Harry Winston, the internationally famous jeweler and diamond dealer, based in New York City, acquired the diamond, which was a yellow cushion-cut weighing 107.60 carats. Harry Winston recut it slightly to its present weight of 107.46 carats, and mounted it in an elaborate clip-pendant combination.
In 1963 he sold the diamond to Marc B. Rojtman and his wife Lilian of the United States, who were keen collectors of jewels. But, they were more renowned as collectors and connoisseurs of Old Master paintings and other art works. They extended their patronage to the study and development of arts, and set up a family foundation that advances education in the arts.
When the Rojtman Diamond was in their possession, they lent it for an exhibition at the De Beers Diamond Pavilion in Johannesburg in 1966.
On April 25th 2006, the Rojtman diamond featured at a Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels Auction, held at Manhattan, New York. The sale of the 107.46-carat, elegant, cushion-shaped, Fancy Yellow color diamond, was expected to be the highlight of the auction. The spectacular diamond had an estimate of $1.5 - 2.0 million placed on it. The sale also featured another historically important diamond the, 65.57-carat, Fancy Dark Orange Brown, Golden Maharajah Diamond with an estimated value of $400,000 to $600,000. Other items in the auction included a spectacular array of jewelry and colored gemstones by Cartier's, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Harry Winston. Sotheby's also held a public viewing of the items to go on sale from April 19 to 24, at York Avenue, in New York.
There was an enthusiastic response to the auction, from buyers representing all regions of the world. The Rojtman diamond as expected achieved a record price of $1.92 million. However, the greatest surprise at the auction was the price achieved by the Golden Maharajah diamond, which fetched a record price of nearly $ 1.4 million, far in excess of the estimated value, after an intense bidding competition between eight of the buyers. The Rojtman and the Golden Maharajah diamonds were both acquired by Graff Diamonds Ltd. of London. |

This is not just some ideal cut hearts and arrows. This is the first important fancy colored diamond to be cut by EightStar Diamond Company raising the bar to the top in fancy color diamonds. A vivid fancy yellow, this EightStar diamond was dubbed "Tweety" by its owner because its color reminded him of the famous cartoon character. Posted by: Richard von Sternberg - December, 24 2007
